Tribute Tuesday – Mike Zeck’s Secret Wars #1

MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS was Marvel’s first big comic event that was directly and specifically tied into a line of action figures, which were created by Mattel in the 1980s. Featuring all of Marvel’s most prominent heroes and villains fighting on Battleworld, the comics and toys were a huge success. I personally had all the comics and as many of the action figures as I was able to track down. Awesome art by Mike Zeck sure helped make it all look amazing. Here’s my Mini Marvels tribute to SECRET WARS #1 based on Mike Zeck’s original classic cover.

Tribute Tuesday – Giant-Size X-Men #1

I drew this week’s tribute this past weekend during Project Comic Con in St. Louis, Missouri – the cover to GIANT-SIZE X-MEN #1, originally penciled by Gil Kane and inked by Dave Cockrum. I drew the Mini Marvel version on an official Marvel variant sketch cover for X-MEN GIANT-SIZE #1.

Giant Size X-men #1 by Dave Cockrum and Chris Giarrusso

Written by Len Wein and illustrated by Dave Cockrum in 1975, GIANT-SIZE X-MEN #1 was the big game-changer for the X-Men franchise, introducing a diverse group of mutants to become new X-Men team members: Colossus from Russia, Storm from Kenya, Nightcrawler from Germany, Wolverine from Canada, Banshee from Ireland, Sunfire from Japan, and the Native American Thunderbird from the Apache tribe. These new X-Men were gathered by Professor X to help team leader Cyclops rescue original X-Men members Beast, Angel, Iceman and Marvel Girl (Jean Grey).
