Tribute Tuesday – Mike Zeck’s Secret Wars #1

MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS was Marvel’s first big comic event that was directly and specifically tied into a line of action figures, which were created by Mattel in the 1980s. Featuring all of Marvel’s most prominent heroes and villains fighting on Battleworld, the comics and toys were a huge success. I personally had all the comics and as many of the action figures as I was able to track down. Awesome art by Mike Zeck sure helped make it all look amazing. Here’s my Mini Marvels tribute to SECRET WARS #1 based on Mike Zeck’s original classic cover.

Tribute Tuesday – Happy Birthday Jack Kirby/Wake Up And Draw Day

Today would be Jack Kirby’s 95th birthday. Jack Kirby created most of Marvel Comics’ most popular characters — The Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, Galactus, The Silver Surfer, The X-Men, Magneto, Captain America, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Mighty Thor, the Avengers, Black Panther, The Inhumans, The Eternals, Machine Man and Devil Dinosaur. Over at DC he gave us The New Gods, Darkside, Kamandi, Omac, Sandman, Mister Miracle, The Boy Commandos, The Guardian and the Newsboy Legion, the Forever People, Manhunter and the Demon, to name a few.

Avengers Characters Sketch by Chris G

In honor of Jack Kirby, the Hero Initiative has declared today to be “Wake Up And Draw Day.” I woke up and drew the above sketch of several Kirby characters. The original art will be donated to an auction to benefit the Hero Initiative along with dozens of other pieces of “Wake Up And Draw” art drawn by other comic professionals. I’ll be sure to post again when the auction is ready to take place.

And if that isn’t enough of a tribute on this Tribute Tuesday, let’s take another look at all the Kirby covers I’ve given the Tribute Tuesday treatment to. There are a lot of them, because as the greatest comic creator of all time, Jack Kirby was responsible for most of my favorite comic book covers of all time…

Tribute Tuesday – John Romita Jr.’s Avengers vol.4 #5

This week’s tribute isn’t a full cover recreation, but it was a piece that was obviously based on John Romita Jr.’s cover to Avengers volume 4, #5, just with a different background and a couple of figures rearranged.

Tribute Tuesday, Avengers 5 by Chris G

I was pretty excited when Brian Bendis and John Romita Jr. teamed up for this Avengers run, as “JR JR” is one of my all-time favorite comic artists around. Thor, Bucky Barnes as Captain America, Wolverine, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and the Vision drawn by Romita Jr. = awesome.
